2003-2012: Attraction and construction of a new Tower

  • 2003 December 17

    Six Tokyo-based broadcasters (NHK and major commercial broadcasters) have launched the "Tokyo Six Broadcasters New Tower Promotion Project" in search of a new Tower of around 600 meters.

  • 2004 December 15

    Sumida Ward and local officials have requested Tobu Railway's cooperation in attracting a new Tower.

  • 2005 February 7

    Tobu Railway has announced to broadcasters and Sumida Ward that it will undertake a new Tower project.

  • 2005 March 28

    Broadcasting company selects Oshiage district of Sumida Ward as first choice

    On March 28, 2005, the development site in the Oshiage district of Sumida Ward, Tokyo, was selected as the location for the construction of a new Tower.

  • 2005 July 22

    Local organizations in Sumida and Taito wards have partnered to form the "Sumida-Taito New Tower Attraction Promotion Liaison Council."

    (The "New Tower Attraction Promotion Council," which is conducting promotional activities within Sumida Ward, and the "New Tokyo Tower Taito Ward Construction Attraction Preparatory Committee," centered around the Taito Ward Shopping District Federation, have confirmed that they will work together on both attraction activities and regional revitalization.)

  • 2006 March 31

    The Sumida/Taito area (Narihirabashi/Oshiage district) has been finalized as the site for the new Tower.

  • 2006 May 1st

    "New Tokyo Tower Co., Ltd." has been established as the main entity for the new Tower project.

  • 2006 November 24

    The developer's proposed design for the new Tower has been released.

  • 2007 October 26

    We are holding a public contest to name the new Tower(until November 25th, with a total of 17,429 entries).

  • 2007 December 11

    We have signed reservation agreements with six Tokyo-based television companies for the use of the new Tower.

  • 2008 April 1st

    Voting has begun nationwide for the naming of the new Tower, with six options: Tokyo EDO Tower, TOKYO SKYTREE, Mirai Tower, Yumemiyagura, Rising East Tower, and Rising Tower(until May 30th).

  • 2008 June 10

    The new Tower's name has been decided as "TOKYO SKYTREE" (total votes: 110,419).

    June 10, 2008: Scenes from the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Tower , which was named TOKYO SKYTREE .

    The company name of Shin-Tokyo Tower Co., Ltd. has been changed to "TOBU TOWER SKYTREE Co., Ltd."

  • 2008 July 14

    Construction begins (groundbreaking ceremony and safety prayer ceremony held)

    July 14, 2008: Scenes from the construction site of TOKYO SKYTREE at the start of construction, and the safety prayer ceremony with sacred ropes (shimenawa) stretched across the site.

  • 2009 February 26

    The color design for TOKYO SKYTREE has been decided.

  • 2009 April 6

    Construction of the above-ground Steel framework for TOKYO SKYTREE has begun.

    (The first Steel framework was installed, approximately 4m high and 2.3m in diameter.)

    April 6, 2009: Construction work in progress, installing the first Steel framework at the start of the above-ground Steel framework construction for TOKYO SKYTREE.

  • 2009 April 16

    TOKYO SKYTREE Info Plaza Opens

    (An information center for the Tokyo TOKYO SKYTREE TOWN development project, centered around Tokyo TOKYO SKYTREE ; closed on May 6, 2012)

  • 2009 October 16

    The height of the TOKYO SKYTREE tower has been set at "634m," and the lighting designs "Iki" and "Miyabi" have been decided.

  • 2010 October 28

    The Official characters for TOKYO SKYTREE have been decided. (" Sorakara-chan," "Teppenpen," and "Sukoburuburu")

  • 2010 December 27

    Decide on the name of the facility

    (The entire facility is "TOKYO SKYTREE TOWN," the commercial facility is "TOKYO Solamachi," and the office facility is "TOKYO SKYTREE East Tower.")

  • 2011 March 31

    The TOKYO SKYTREE tower reached its maximum height of 634m (13:34)

  • 2011 June 7

    TOKYO SKYTREE TOWN project outline announced

    TOKYO SKYTREE Uniform design decided

  • 2011 November 17

    TOKYO SKYTREE has been recognized by Guinness World Records™ as the "world's tallest Tower."

    A commemorative ceremony held on November 17, 2011, when TOKYO SKYTREE was certified by Guinness World Records as the world's tallest Tower structure.

  • 2011 November 22

    Reservations for Group Admission ticket to the TOKYO SKYTREE Tembo Deck have begun.

  • 2012 February 29th

    Completion (completion ceremony held on March 2nd)

  • 2012 March 17

    "Narihirabashi Station" has been renamed "TOKYO SKYTREE Station".

    The line will be given the nickname "TOBU SKYTREE Line" (between Asakusa/Oshiage and Tobu Dobutsu Koen on the Isesaki Line).

  • 2012 March 22

    Reservations for Individual Admission ticket to the TOKYO SKYTREE Tembo Deck have begun.

  • 2012 April 23

    Regular FM radio broadcasting (NHK, J-WAVE) begins

    TOKYO SKYTREE TOWN Grand Opening

    (For the 50 days until July 10th, TOKYO SKYTREE will be by reservation only. Individual Admission ticket will only be sold as Fixed date/time ticket(sold via lottery).)

    On May 22, 2012, a highly successful opening ceremony was held to commemorate the grand opening of TOKYO SKYTREE TOWN.

  • 2012 July 11

    TOKYO SKYTREE resumes normal operations.

    (Tickets will be sold on the day of the event; online reservations (advance Purchase) will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis.)

  • 2012 October 1st

    TOKYO MX begins simulcasting (broadcasting from both Tokyo Tower and TOKYO SKYTREE).

  • 2013 May 12

    TOKYO MX transmission point relocation complete

    (Broadcasts will only be available from TOKYO SKYTREE.)

  • 2013 May 31

    Regular broadcasting by six Tokyo-based broadcasting companies (NHK and major commercial broadcasters) begins (9:00)

  • 2015 February 19

    TOKYO SKYTREE began selling the " Fast Skytree Ticket, " an Admission ticket exclusively for foreign visitors to Japan. *Currently, it is not available for purchase.

Maintaining and expanding visitor numbers from 2015 to 2020

  • 2015 May 22

    To commemorate the 3rd anniversary of its opening, the number of lighting fixtures has been increased from a total of 1,995 to 2,075, and the standard "Miyabi" lighting has been replaced with a new lighting design.

  • 2015 December 7

    Three Tokyo-based AM radio stations (TBS Radio, Bunka Broadcasting, and Nippon Broadcasting System) began regular broadcasting via FM supplementary broadcasting (13:00).

  • 2016 March 18

    The " SKYTREE ROUND THEATER ," a performance space that transforms the window glass into a giant screen for projecting images, has opened on the 350th floor of the Tembo Deck deck at night.

  • 2017 May 18

    To commemorate the 5th anniversary of its opening, the regular "Nobori" lighting has been turned on.

    A mailbox called " Skytree Post" has been installed on the 345th floor of the Tembo Deck .

  • 2018 October 16

    A new exhibition area, " SKYTREE GALLERY ," has opened on the 1st Group floor.

  • 2018 October 23

    We launched "SKYTREE TERRACE TOURS," a guided tour that allows visitors to view the outdoor area at a height of 155m on the TOKYO SKYTREE. *This tour is currently not being held.

  • 2020 February 27

    Increased the number of lighting devices from 2,075 to 2,362

    (With the decision to host the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, an increase in foreign tourists visiting TOKYO SKYTREE is expected, providing an opportunity for the facility to attract even more attention from overseas. Therefore, the number of lighting fixtures will be increased from a total of 2,075 to a total of 2,362 (high-luminosity lights that can illuminate up to 20 km away will be installed at the top of the Antenna gain tower, and lighting fixtures will be added to the entire Antenna gain tower and to the intermediate sections of the tower body at approximately 250m and 150m).

    The standard lighting designs "Iki," "Miyabi," and "Nobori" have been renewed and the lights have been turned on.

2020 to 2021: The spread of COVID-19
Relaxing restrictions: Making facilities even more attractive

  • 2020 March 1st

    Temporarily closed (until May 31st) due to the state of emergency declared in response to the spread of COVID-19

  • 2020 March 27

    Special blue lighting will be used to represent the Earth, and messages will be projected using laser mapping (until May 31, and from December 18, 2020, to March 21, 2021).

    (Amidst the spread of COVID-19, special blue lighting was illuminated to convey the message, "Let's unite as a world to confront the globally spreading COVID-19 pandemic and overcome it together," and the message "TOGETHER WE CAN ALL WIN!" was projected onto the Tembo Deck using laser mapping.)

    On March 27, 2020, the TOKYO SKYTREE was illuminated with special blue lighting and projected messages via laser mapping.

  • 2020 September 25

    A monument called "W1SH RIBBON" has been installed on the 350th floor of the TOKYO SKYTREE Tembo Deck .

    (With no end in sight to the COVID-19 pandemic, this was installed with the hope of supporting everyone's spirits as they overcome this difficulty and move forward towards a new Future.)

    On September 25, 2020, a photo was taken inside TOKYO SKYTREE with the W1SH RIBBON monument installed on floor 350 in the background.

  • 2020 October 1st

    The Uniform worn by Staff at the TOKYO SKYTREE Observation deck and other locations have been redesigned.

    On October 1, 2020, TOKYO SKYTREE Staff wore Uniform .

  • 2021 April 25

    Second temporary closure due to the state of emergency declared in response to the spread of COVID-19 (until May 31st)

  • 2021 June 8

    We have launched the " Skytree Enjoy Pack, " a great value set package that allows you to enjoy TOKYO SKYTREE TOWN and the surrounding area all day long.

  • 2021 June 10

    The Ticket Counter on the 4th floor entrance area has been relocated, the number of advance ticket vending machines has been increased, and a new machine for same-day tickets has been introduced.

    (As part of the celebrations marking the 10th anniversary of the facility's opening, and by introducing ticket vending machines, the number of face-to-face Ticket sales counters will be reduced, which will also help prevent the spread of COVID-19.)

  • 2021 July 1st

    A new exhibition area, "SKYTREE ARCHIVES," has opened on the 4th floor entrance area.

2022 to 2026: 10th anniversary of opening - Increase in visitors from overseas

  • 2022 May 22

    TOKYO SKYTREE TOWN celebrates its 10th anniversary

    • "TOKYO SKYTREE TOWN 10th Anniversary Celebration" will be held.
    • "Ichikawa Ebizo's Sky Gaze" will be held (featuring an opening address by the 11th generation Ichikawa Ebizo, who carries on the Tradition of the Naritaya family, and a performance of the "glare," which can only be performed by actors associated with the Naritaya family and is said to bring good health and protection from illness for a year, at the top of the TOKYO SKYTREE, 634 meters above ground).

  • 2024 March 19

    The official shop "SKYTREE SHOP" on the 5th floor has been completely renovated and reopened.

  • 2024 March 31

    TOKYO SKYTREE's annual number of foreign visitors has exceeded 1 million for the first time.

    (Approximately 1.27 million visitors between April 1, 2023 and March 31, 2024)

  • 2024 July 19

    "SKYTREE 8K monitors" have been newly installed on the 350th floor of the Tembo Deck , facing in each direction.

  • 2024 September 21

    TOKYO SKYTREE reaches 50 million cumulative visitors (4,506 days after opening).

  • 2025 January

    " SKYTREE SPACE " opens on the 1st Group floor of TOKYO SKYTREE.

  • 2026 March 16

    Group reservations will be changed from fax-based to online (effective for entry on April 1st).

  • 2026 April 1st

    A variable pricing system will be introduced for Individual Admission ticket Admission ticket to the Observation deck (effective for admissions from April 1st).
