The TOKYO SKYTREE was constructed in 2012 in Sumida Ward, Tokyo, as a 634-meter-tall Free-standing broadcasting tower. The reason for its construction was that six Tokyo television stations were transmitting radio waves, and there was a possibility that the numerous 200-meter-tall skyscrapers in central Tokyo would be affected, so transmission from a new Tower of around 600 meters was desired.

Various locations in the Tokyo metropolitan area have expressed interest in building the new Tower, and in November 2004, Sumida Ward in Tokyo put forward its bid. Tobu Railway, which owned the land on which the TOKYO SKYTREE now stands, also cooperated in the bid, and as a result, in March 2006, the Narihirabashi and Oshiage districts of Sumida Ward, Tokyo, where the TOKYO SKYTREE now stands, were selected.

Tobu Railway, which owned the site, developed a large-scale complex centered around a new Tower, incorporating commercial, cultural, and educational facilities, and TOKYO SKYTREE TOWN was born in May 2012.
TOKYO SKYTREE TOWN is a "city with a tower" that stretches approximately 400 meters from east to west, centered around the "TOKYO SKYTREE," which boasts a height of 634 meters, and consisting of "TOKYO Solamachi," a commercial facility with more than 300 shops, as well as Tower and other buildings.
Additionally, TOKYO SKYTREE TOWN also houses attractions such as the SUMIDA AQUARIUM and the Konica Minolta Planetarium"Tenku" in TOKYO SKYTREE TOWN.

The site where the TOKYO SKYTREE now stands was formerly a freight yard where freight trains used to arrive and depart.
This location originated in April 1902 when Tobu Railway extended the TOBU SKYTREE Line(Isesaki Line) from Kita-Senju Station and opened "Azuma-bashi Bridge Station" (now "TOKYO SKYTREE Station").
Subsequently, it functioned as a terminal station for both freight and passenger trains, but in March 1993, freight train operations ceased, and it was used as a materials storage area for Tobu Railway.

We wanted to decide on the name of TOKYO SKYTREE with the participation of many people.
We solicited applications from all over the country, and from 18,606 submissions, we selected six designs based on the following images ① to ③: "Tokyo EDO Tower," "TOKYO SKYTREE," "Mirai Tower," "Yumemiyagura," "Rising East Tower," and "Rising Tower."

1. The name should reflect the image and characteristics of the new Tower.
2. To be enjoyed by children, the elderly, and foreigners alike.
3. It possesses dignity and is worthy of being a representative building of Japan 50 or even 100 years from now.

Out of these six options, "TOKYO SKYTREE" (32,699 votes) was selected in a nationwide vote held from April 1st to May 30th, 2008, with a total of 111,419 votes cast.
